The oIP provides support to any faculty or professional staff member who would like to develop a short-term study abroad program or in a culturally diverse area within the United States. Recently JMU has provided successful summer study abroad opportunities in Argentina, Canada, China, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Ghana, Guam, India, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, the Philippines, Scotland, South Africa, and the U.K. Generally, courses run from three to seven weeks over the summer and offer six to nine credit hours. Courses offered during the regular semester with a required trip over spring break or at the end of the semester have also been successful.
oIP staff members work with faculty and staff in overall program design, housing and transportation, budget development, program promotion, and safety, liability and communication issues. In addition, the oIP manages the student application process. Course approval must be routed through regular unit and college channels.
